It is no mystery that subject lines have a huge impact on whether someone opens your email or if it goes straight in the trash. But what statistics are there to back this up? Well, research from Optinmonster found that 47% of email recipients will open an email based solely on the subject line. Therefore if you have a good and enticing subject line, you could be seeing almost half of your mail list open your email marketing campaigns or newsletters.
On the flip side of this, if you get the subject lines wrong, it can have a very negative impact on open rates. In fact, the same research from Optinmonster said that 69% of recipients will report an email as spam based solely on the subject line.
Getting a right balance between what users want to see in their email subject lines, and what you want the campaign to promote can be hard, but using simple tricks such as funny or shocking terminology to entice the user to read more, numbers and lists to make your subject line different to others or keeping subject lines super simple so that they can be interpreted by everyone are great easy ways to ensure your open rates don’t drop.
